We The People
Chapter One
Washington, D.C.
2 A.M. August 18th

Jack Bond was jolted from sleep by the buzzing bedside telephone.

“Mr. President?” It sounded like Ed Bailey, his Chief of Staff.

“Yes, is that you, Ed?” he asked in a sleepy voice.

“Yes, sir. Mr. President, we are under attack, nuclear attack, and it’s bad! We must get you to the shelter immediately.” The no-nonsense tone brought Jack to immediate wakefulness.

“Yes, I’ll be ready in two minutes. Who is attacking, the Russians?”

“Ah, we’re not sure yet Mr. President. General Armstrong called saying there have been blasts worldwide, including San Diego and Norfolk. He’ll brief you in the bunker, sir. Please hurry, Washington may be hit at any moment!”

“Good God! I’m on my way!” Jack said as he rolled out of bed.

His wife, Debbie, was now awake and had heard only the question about being attacked by the Russians.

“What’s happening? Who was that?”

“Get up immediately, dear. Someone has started a bloody nuclear war! We have to get to the shelter right away,” he told his wide-eyed first lady. “I don’t know much yet, except that we must hurry. Call Jeannette right now and have the kids ready to go immediately. We have just minutes!”
